Photography Exhibitions London - May/June2015

I just booked my tickets for the 2015 Sony World Photography Exhibition, so I thought it’s time again to have a look what other photography related exhibitions are on in London over the next couple of months. Please find below a whole list with links and dates to exhibitions and galleries. Most of them are admission free, but for some of the bigger events you have to pay for.

As I just mentioned I will go to the 2015 Sony World Photography Exhibition at the Somerset House. Thanks to theprintspace, who printed, framed and mounted this year’s awards, you can get 20% off by using the code “theprintspace20”!

I’m also thinking of going to Photo London, a 4-day event at the Somerset House as well, where galleries will be exhibiting a diverse range of photographs. Furthermore there will be talks, music, screenings and social events!

Tate Britain has a very interesting and rare exhibition of salted paper prints from 1840-1860, one of the earliest forms of photography. I am fascinated by those old processes and find it very inspirational to see where we come from, so I hope I can make it to the Tate to have a look at some 150-year-old prints!

Speaking of inspiration I think it’s important to also look at and learn from other non-photographic arts, so I try to go to the National Gallery and the Tate Modern every now and again. I do really like the look and feel of impressionist paintings, so I will have a chance to learn more about it at the current exhibition at the National Gallery “Inventing Impressionism”.

I’m not sure if I can actually make it to all the exhibitions I just mentioned, definitely not to all of the ones I listed below, but I will of course find the time to pop into the Photographer’s Gallery and have a look at the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2015!

If you know of any other exhibitions or galleries in and around of London, please leave a comment and share :-)

Photography Exhibitions London - Dec2014/Jan2015

Every time I see an ad for a photography exhibition I take a quick picture with my phone or if I see it online I save the link to my reading list or tweet about it. Most of the times though I forget about it soon after and when I actually think of going, the exhibitions are usually over.

So I thought I’ll put all these exhibitions and galleries into one notebook in Evernote, so hopefully I’ll see a few more exhibitions in the future.

When I finished the list of current exhibitions, I thought I might as well publish them on my blog, so you also have all of them in one place. I added the dates, the standard admission fees and the links for further information.

Unfortunately I don’t have time to see all of them, but on my personal shortlist are the Taylor Wessing Prize in the National Portrait Gallery, the Great Londoners at the Hoxton and Celebrated at the Atlas Gallery.

When I’m around Oxford Circus and have some time spare, I usually pop into the Photographers’ Gallery or the Getty Images Gallery to see if they have anything new and interesting.

If you want to see some exhibitions between Christmas and New Year, just check the opening times, as they may differ during the holiday.

If you know of any other exhibitions or galleries in and around of London, please leave a comment and share :-)

Street Photography

My recent trip to Hong Kong triggered my love for street photography. I mean, I always loved street photography, but I never really tried to do it myself. It is very difficult and time consuming, but it is kind of the purest form of photography.

About a year before I travelled to Hong Kong, I had watched Zack Arias' Street Photography tutorial on Kelby One, so I remembered a few tips and tricks.

When I came back to London, I started researching more about street photography.

I got David Gibson’s book “The Street Photographer’s Manual”, which I think is a great starting point. It is not just a manual, which tells you what to do, it rather gives you concepts, projects and ideas to work on. Furthermore Gibson gives tons of book recommendations and online links for further reading (or viewing).

The best online resource about street photography I think is Eric Kim’s Blog. He is a street photographer and also offers workshops around the world.

Some online collectives are:

http://www.in-public.com

http://www.un-posed.com

http://www.thatslife.in

http://www.burnmyeye.org

I want to keep shooting street photography in my free time, as I am sure it will also improve my other photography. I am very lucky to call London my home, so I have a big playground for street photography right on my doorstep!

I will keep uploading my street photos to my flickr account: https://www.flickr.com/photos/wilhaub

Btw, Eric Kim recommends following these street photographers on flickr: http://erickimphotography.com/blog/2012/06/11/25-talented-street-photographers-you-should-follow-on-flickr/
